A joint project between Stanford and University of Wisconsin followed 1,000 volunteers. The volunteers recorded the number of hours they slept each night and doctors then measured the ghrelin and leptin levels and charted their weight. The results showed that the volunteers who logged less than 8 hours of sleep per night had lower levels of leptin, higher levels of ghrelin and a higher level of body fat. More specifically, the people who slept the least amount of hours per night weighed the most.

Cortisol

Cortisol is another hormone that is affected by sleep loss. Cortisol is sometimes referred to as the "stress hormone" because it is secreted in higher levels during the body's "fight or flight" response. Cortisol is involved in a number of functions including:

  • Proper glucose metabolism
  • Regulation of blood pressure
  • Insulin release for blood sugar maintenance
  • Immune function
  • Inflammatory response

There is not a clear one to one cause and effect between sustained elevated cortisol and weight gain, but numerous studies demonstrate that prolonged stress wreaks havoc on our bodies and can hinder our efforts at weight control.
